Backpacking and Hiking

Our hiking and backpacking area is the Maasai country of the Nguruman Forest and Loita Hills. The terrain is one of contrasts, from arid savanna and acacia thornbush country to dense cloud forest. Here, we will be accompanied by one or two Maasai tribesmen as we hike. On the savanna you are likely to see many plains animals; wildebeests, zebra and several species of gazelle as well as the Maasai herding their cattle and goats. From the top of the Nguruman Escarpment you will see breathtaking views of the Rift Valley. As we climb into the cloud forest, that rim the Rift Valley at 8,000, feet we will follow trails made by elephants and buffalo. You are likely to see the acrobatic Colobus monkeys leaping from limb to limb high in the canopy above.

During the hike participants will visit Maasai bomas. On at least one night we will have a goat roast prepared the Maasai way... over a huge campfire. At night, you will be soothed to sleep by sounds of hyenas, lions, elephants and the singing coming from Maasai bomas and the mowing of distant Maasai cows. The sounds of Africa that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Your visit to Maasailand can be as short as one night. We will camp near a Maasai boma and go for a short afternoon hike. Return to camp and enjoy a hot shower (portable camp shower). Later, we will sit by the camp fire and enjoy roasted goat for supper. In the morning we will go for another short hike before continuing on to our next destination. This is a great stopover on our way to and from the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

We can organize longer backpacking trips of up to three weeks. If you like, you can participate with route planning, map reading and navigation. You can carry all your own gear along with part of the food and cooking equipment as well as share in the camp chores. Or, you can let us do the work while you enjoy the experience of hiking through the African bush. You only need carry a day pack while we hike and have porters carry the bulk of your gear to the next camp.
