Community Service Projects
WOLTUMUSOI
SCHOOL PROJECT
This
school is located in our hiking area of the Nguruman Forest. Together
with members of the village, CAA has slowly and progressively developed
this school project from its humble beginnings. The community has had
the confidence and trust in us to allow us play a major role in the
development of their school.
Making a positive impact to the environment, individuals and the
communities we work with is a major goal for us. As you watch the 150
school children run around the school compound, you may not realize
this has been many years in the making.
- To the environment; we fully subscribe to the principal of doing
least harm and doing our best to leave areas we operate in their best
condition. If we can, we will try and effect positive and beneficial
changes to our outdoor classrooms. Where we can, we will mobilize
individuals and community members to participate in projects that will
effect these changes. We hope in the future to introduce tree planting
and conservation projects.
We have the advantage of being placed in a great vantage point where we
can see most or at least the bigger picture of how things interplay for
the larger community. We also believe that the community has the right
to determine what they want for themselves, and that we as visitors can
and should only be partner facilitators in their development. We will
first learn from them. We will learn how they have used their culture
to develop as a community and then share our knowledge. The resulting
hybrid will hopefully produce a product that will give each individual
in the community a better chance at survival and a prosperous life.
We believe that one of the most effective tools of empowering every
individual and community as a whole is education. We will
therefore request that you voluntarily participate by
donating books, building materials and time for the school project that
we run in this area. We encourage this participation to be
“hands on”, so you will in at least one of the days
go out with the community members and work on a specific project. As
you work together, you will have a great opportunity to learn their
culture, make great and lasting friendships, learn a lot about yourself
and get a better perspective of issues that challenge poorer nations
and communities. You will end up learning much more about one of the
most unique cultures in the world than if you had read a book or
attended the best cultural schools. You will be living the experience!
CAA also tries to expose the people of remote areas to the modern
world. We have brought Maasai school children to Nairobi to experience
city life. We have also taken the school teachers from Oltumuoi on a
trip to Mt. Kenya’s Point Lenana (16,355 Ft). These were a
new experience for them and certainly exciting expeditions.
